Training Health Workers

This clip emphasises and illustrates the 'both-ways' philosophy to training of ATSIWHs which joins up traditional knowledge with Western medical practices. It shows the functioning of an Institute dedicated to tertiary education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and providing a flexible learning environment for adults of varying backgrounds and experience. It shows classes in clinical skills and preparation for front-line emergency intervention. The clip also raises issues related to education, training, professional pathways, and national registration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers. There is discussion of Certificates 3 and 4, the classification of Registered Aboriginal Health Practitioner, and shows the importance of the increasing professionalization of these health care workers.
